Glock Gen 5 MOS News

Three Glock Gen 5 MOS and two Glock "crossovers" are now in South African gun stores.  These being the Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS, Glock 19 Gen 5 MOS and the Glock 34 Gen 5 MOS. The new  Glock 45 and Glock 19X don't make the cut to join the ranks of the Gen 5 club because they haven't got a flared magazine well, that's according to Glock.

In the past, limited editions of Glock's with front serrations have been produced. These FS models were always in demand and have become collector's items.  What's great to see now is that all the Glock Gen 5 MOS  have this features as standard. The two brand new Glock 17 Gen 5 MOS and the Glock 19 Gen MOS have a FS slide. Furthermore, the G 34 MOS will only be produced with an FS slide as well.

When this statement is brought up my comment is: "How can an extra tactile finish on a handgun that has a lot of action going on where the optic is fitted, be a gimmick." I know mini red dot users who use their optic to rack the slide by hooking it into their belt or edge of a table. Hopefully,  these guys will find the FS really useful. Realistically the mini red dot optic does use up a lot of real estate at the rear end of the pistol so it makes sense to offer an alternative tactile surface and let's face it it does look pretty damn kewl.

Press Checks & More

This is the blurb from Glock. "The front serrations (FS) provide a different look and an additional tactile surface choice when manipulating the slide giving the operator positive traction even with wet or sweaty hand. This new design offers the advantage for professional users to do a fast press check before and after firing. The user may grip the slide by the front serrations with the weak hand and move it to the rear until a clear view of the chamber is possible in order to ensure that a round is properly chambered. When done correctly the hand gets nowhere near the muzzle of the pistol."

Like all the Glock Gen 5 MOS  the new 17, 19 and 34  have the GLOCK Marksman Barrel (GMB) which delivers increased accuracy with enhanced polygonal rifling and an improved barrel crown. Finger grooves are no a thing of the past. Furthermore an ambidextrous slide stop levers for better versatility and control, and a DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) finish, which is a tougher and more durable surface treatment than the previous "Tenifer" style treatment.

RMR (mini red dot) Options

There are more Ruggedised Mini Red-dot (RMR) options out there than ever. These range from not so ruggedised airsoft knock offs to top of the range Trijicon, Eotech and Aimpoint. They are expensive though, costing almost as much as the pistol itself. I am testing theTru Glo mini red dot at the moment. Tru Glo sights are based in Richardson Texas and mnufacture a range of sights that are amongst the best out there. The Tru Glo RMR is machined (not cast like the cheaper Chinese knock offs) from aircraft grade aluminium. This red dot sight has been mounted on our Glock Gen 5 MOS demo and gets above average mileage. It is used dailly and delivers at a very attractive price of R3990 incl VAT
